Islam: Two Things We Must Guard Against As Muslims: The Holy Prophet, Mohammed, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him during his life-time and in most, if not all the occasions, used to make the following statement as an introduction or prelude to any sermon or interaction: All praises are due to Allah whom we give all thanks to, we seek His help and forgiveness. We seek refuge in His name from the EVIL WHISPERS OF OUR SOULS and the CONSEQUENCES OF OUR EVIL ACTS. It is maintained by the majority of the jurists that nothing destroys an individual Muslims life like the following: 1. Evil Whispers of ones soul and; 2. The Consequences of ones evil acts. An instance is given of what constitutes an evil whispers of our soul which I understand it to be evil thinking that is yet to be translated into action. We often think of what becomes of us if the tyre of the car we are driving in got bursted or what the scene would be like if the ten storey-building in our area collapsed with its occupants. Any negative thought, even if it is yet to be translated into action, affects us in a negative way and sometimes influence our desire and serve as a temptation, leading us sometimes to try putting it in motion. Again, it is argued that because this type of thinking often comes to us unconciously, the only way to stop it from influencing us is to seek for Allahs protection against it, hence, the statement of the prophet, We seek refuge from Him(Allah) from the EVIL WHISPERS OF OUR SOULS. Similarly, man by nature is not free from all sins. Allah Himself confirms this in the following Hadith Qudus: O Mankind, you sin everyday and night but my doors of forgiveness are open all day and night. If you will come to me with sinful acts full of heavens and earth and then seek for my forgiveness, I will be ready to forgive you. And because sin is inescapable and inevitable, we must always seek for Allahs protection against the CONSEQUENCES OF OUR EVIL ACTS. I enjoin you all to avoid the above two things as you would avoid rattle-snake.
