Islam is not a problem much more than Christianity once was a problem. The real issue in the Islamic world is the prevalence of religious fundamentalism. Look back at the Christian world in centuries past (and maybe a few Christian nations in Africa today), and a comparable degree of uncivilized practices are evident. Read the Old Testament of the Bible, and an equatable many barbarous punishments are advocated for petty offenses of religious scripture. The difference between the Christian world and the Islamic world in todays era is that the Christian world has been permeated much more by secular advances in human rights and cosmopolitan reinterpretations of religious texts. The worst, most offensive and inhumanitarian parts of the Bible have been watered down or ignored in modern Christian adherence. If the progress among most Judeo-Christian societies is instructive, then the Islamic world may be just as capable of liberalization in the long run. What it requires is that those of us in the West refrain from turning our backs on those Muslims who are also distraught by radical Islam, deepening the fissures with the Muslim population by impugning their religion itself, and continuing to scorch their backyard with ill-advised military interventions.
