Israeli election update #17 - Not strictly speaking an election - TopicsExpress

Israeli election update #17 - Not strictly speaking an election update, but inasmuch as the events in Paris have been most of what politicians have been talking about, I think it worthwhile to hear Netanyahu’s speech in Paris, given in the Grand Synagogue (in Hebrew, translated to French, with English subtitles): youtu.be/ge8h8XCeaGs - Yair Lapid, head of the Yesh Atid party, will be holding an online chat in English tomorrow, Tuesday January 13th, at 9pm Israel time (2pm New York time). It will take place on Facebook, presumably on Yair Lapid’s page, which is where the Yesh Atid web site points to as the official Facebook page (https://facebook/YairLapid). - In perhaps another attempt to sway English-speaking voters, Yesh Atid is also hosting a Superbowl party in Tel Aviv with Yair Lapid (superbowl.yeshatid.org.il). - Meretz held mock gay weddings outside Jewish Home’s Rosh Haayin headquarters today, in protest of the recent video interviewing Jewish Home MKs about their views of gay marriage. This isn’t the first time Meretz has used this stunt, as they had a very similar protest in 2013 in protest to statements against gay marriage by Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan. Ben Dahan is the Deputy Minister of Religious Services in the current (outgoing) government, and recently switched from the Tekuma faction directly into Jewish Home, forcing him to enter their upcoming primaries. In the current government, the only openly gay MK is Nitzan Horowitz from Meretz (he is the second openly gay MK in Israeli history), although Horowitz announced last month that he is leaving politics and would not be running in the upcoming election. - Labor MK Shelly Yachimovich, who headed the party in the last election, has asked her supporters to stop donating to her campaign, as she has already reached the maximum allowed for the primary campaign, according to Labor’s by-laws. The primary is taking place tomorrow. - Jewish Home MK and Deputy Minister of Education Avi Wortzman fired his media advisor Udi Tenne, after he made offensive comments about another Jewish Home MK, Shuli Mualem-Refaeli. Tenne had commented that Mualem-Refaeli’s campaign was based solely on the fact that she’s the widow of an IDF officer. Wortman said: I will not accept a public servant expressing himself in such a disgusting fashion to an MK who has gone through so much and has also had to deal with losing her husband - who fell in the line of duty as an officer in the Israeli Defense Forces.” - Moshe Kahlon has pledged to disband the Israel Land Authority, which manages all state-owned land in Israel, which makes up an amazing 93% of all land in Israel. Kahlon’s goal is to lower the cost of housing in Israel. He said only Cuba and North Korea hold quantities of land like the Israel Land Authority.”
