Israeli soldiers raided Aida Refugee Camp last night around 3am, arresting 19-year-old Yaqoub Hammad and 19-year-old Odai Abu Odeh from their homes. Soldiers moved quickly, likely trying to avoid the confrontations that have met them in recent months. Afterward, Yaqoubs family gathers like most do after arrests...to drink tea. In the past week alone, the Israeli military has arrested over 130 Palestinians as political prisoners, many of whom are now in the solitary confinement/interrogation stage of detention. Aida Camp has seen an agonizing spike in arrests in the last year, but the homes I visit...its always 3adi (normal), the boys expect it. As a friend put it recently, prison is like a tax that most Palestinians pay.
