Isshin-ryū Kobudō: Kyan Chōtoku no sai - TopicsExpress

Isshin-ryū Kobudō: Kyan Chōtoku no sai (喜屋武朝徳の釵) Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei created Kyan Chōtoku no sai, shortened to Kyan no sai (喜屋の釵) from basic sai techniques he learned from Kyan Chōtoku. Dan Smith wrote that Kyan Chotoku never taught sai techniques yet Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei said he learned sai from Kyan Chotoku. I had a Interview with Taira Kazu at Hotel Harbor, Tairagawa, Okinawa on August 29, 1997. Taira Kazu was a student of Kyan Chōtoku. he stated that he had trained with Chan Chotoku at the Agricultural High School Karate Club and also at Kyan’s wife house in Kadena, from 1941 to 1943. Taira Kazuo stated that he had observed the seniors in the dojo practice sai and a form of Sanchin but said he as a junior did not personally learn sai or Sanchin (Seisan kata with tension and abdominal breathing). Because Dan Smith wrote that Kyan Chōtoku did not teach tension in Seisan kata, In an interview with Nakazato Joen I asked if Kyan Chōtoku taught tension in Seisan kata, his reply was yes. He also stated Kyan Taught abdominal breathing, but I will cover this in another post. Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei, had learned Tokumine no kun from Kyan Chotoku and was teaching it but had no sai kata. So he created a sai kata and named it after Kyan Chotoku who had taught him the sai, but no sai kata to honor him. Later, Shimabuku Tatsuo would creat Kusanku sai kata. Within Kusanku sai kata, we can find, Kyan no sai. Odo, Seikichi who studied with Shimabuku Tatsuo teaches a Kyan Chotoku no sai. I learned this Kyan no sai on my first tour of duty on Okinawa from Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei. It is one of seven Isshin-ryū Kobudō kata I learned from Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei.
