Isshin-ryū karate Shimabuku Tatsuo Sensei taught three Kotekitai (小手鍛痛い). The one shown here in this video clip is the second kotekitae drill. Kote (小手) is forearm and kitae (鍛痛い) means (1) forging; tempering; (2) drilling; training; disciplining; refining. But there is more then forging and conditioning the forearms and edge of hand. The drill also perfects our open and close hand blocking skills and punching and striking techniques. Hard punch, hard block. Soft open-hand-sweep block and open-hand-chop. Closed fist is considered hard where open hand techniques are considered soft. Things to look for: Seisan stance is short, yet solid. Knees are bent. When punching, the joins of the arm is tensed and locked. Power when in the short seisan or sanchin stance since the hips are square to the opponent does not allow using the hips. It is the same as with gamaku or very little use of the waist. Kenpo Gokui (拳法極意) Kenpo Essential points 法剛柔呑吐 method hard soft drink spit 手逢空 則入 hand time empty rule enter
