Istanbul ( Turkey) this morning : A group of bicycle activists protesting against the construction of the Third Bosphorus Bridge this morning, calling for more public transport and other alternative solutions. Local residents and some students from the nearby Koç University also joined the protests. (photo via @efebay_) The Third Bosphorus Bridge is being built on the north of Istanbul, the only remaining green part of the city of 15 million inhabitants. While the government argues that the new bridge will be used to handle transit traffic and relieve the congestion on the other two, the bridge is actually too far away for anyone to use practically. Activists are saying the bridge will lead to another urbanization boom and construction frenzy, increasing the already high levels of traffic, pollution, and population. According to an official report, at least 1.6 million trees will be cut to build the bridge and the connecting motorways.
