Istanbul is absolutely magnificent. More mosques dot the skyline than Baptist churches in Birmingham, Alabama - over 800 to be inexact! I went all over the city in a tour group for better efficiency. The food was great and the people half western, half Arabesque. My interest lay in architecture, design, and details of construction as seen in these photos. Notice the vertical tenon in the huge wooden door and the hundreds of years of wear on the marble threshold. Throughout the Ancient World this is the way it is and such study is critical for both the personal property appraiser and the novelist that I am. As are most of my journeys abroad, this one to the eastern Mediterranean was exhausting. On my return I needed a couple of days of rest before I hit the trail again.
