Isurusi Yebumarachi As concerns the all too common attacks on women under the guise of enforcing a non-existent decent dress code - I remain shocked if not entirely perplexed that it is fellow women who cheer as their comrades are stripped of their mini skirts or all other outfits that the men perceive as indecent. The attack on the lady in the Githurai bus made me realize that ladies need to have something that we call solidarity, reading from the same script and speaking with one voice. More so in issues to do with basic freedoms as having final authority on what to wear. If we encourage the stripping of those “indecently” dressed , we may soon end up with a situation where all women will be harassed on one flimsy excuse or another – one may even be questioned why she ought a Nokia and not a Samsung or vice versa, or why she is taking coffee and not tea ! To frame this, I wish to share the wise words of Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) who narrates how the Hitler government progressed slowly by slowly until all citizens became its slaves. First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ As I pen off, I wonder why a total stranger on the streets ought to dictate to my daughter how she should dress ! - I thus wonder, if Kenya is indeed a democracy and a state of free citizens ! shouldn’t our women be free to dress as they deem fit - men cant be the ones deciding what is good, decent or smart for women ! Or are women slaves and we men the masters?
