It’s like saying “SHE KILLS BABY SEALS” to say “SHE’S ON WELFARE”, writes Paige Lucas-Stannard, as if it’s “the lowest and most disgusting thing ever”. And yet, she points out (follow the link): • Those on welfare may have been paying taxes for years, and may again. • Everyone uses public programs (roads, libraries, schools, hospitals, for example) so why is only “welfare” vilified? • Social assistance programs are supposed to address poverty, and the health impacts of poverty exceed those of smoking. • Being on welfare does not provide a licence for policing recipients’ behavior (what they buy, have, or drive, for example). •At the end of the day, it is children in the firing line of vilification.
