It a because of the existence of self so that there is a selfness with strong subjectivity. The self is the root of our thoughts. The selfness brings about sufferings; with selfness comes the concept of mine: this is my son, my wife, my father and my mother, all you love are those around and in your own family. It is because of the existence of the form of self so that we cannot salvage all sentient beings extensively as the great compassionate Avalokiteśvara bodhisattva does. The form of self is a constraint like the clouds covering the sun. It is because of the form of self that we try to seek outside. It is to seek ones own happiness by sacrificing others so that there is the law of the jungle: the weak are the prey of the strong. The mind states matter much more than the materials. Life is a kind of perception; Happiness is a kind of mind state. If you can be content, there will be happiness everywhere. ~teaching by Venerable Master Fa Yong
