It all comes down, in my opinion, to the physicality. Stopping the play and asking for the patron to be removed would have been commendable. The actor taking things into his own hands and physically assaulting the patron himself was wrong. Yes, the patron was way out of line, but there are ways to handle it. Violence is not one of the ways. From all accounts, John Lacey is a fine man and actor, but he may have overstepped here. Sometimes our response in the moment isnt always the correct one. As for stage management/house management responding: as a former stage manager, most of the time you cant hear audience reactions like hecklers over a monitor. As a producer, I recommend that all theaters make policies regarding these types of situations clear to their actors, crew, staff. With a policy in place, incidents like this will be a mention the the nightly report and nothing else. Producers, lets all learn from this unfortunate situation.
