It amazes me how so many people are truly blind to what horses are worth by the pound at the border. When a kill buyer is asking $700-950 a horse, sure it maybe double or triple what that buyer paid for the horse but thats his job to make a profit. However, it isnt more than what he can get at the border. A 1000 pound horse can easily bring 750.00 to slaughter. So, before you listen to people say that double or triple what they bring at the local auction - also remember these buyers didnt visit the local auctions to buy horses and loose money or break even. They buy them to ship them to the border, and at the border theyre worth A LOT MORE than at the local auctions! If you dont want to save a horse off the kill truck at slaughter price, my suggestion is start going to the sale and start bidding on horses there because they will be cheaper than what youll be giving off the kill truck. The differene for me is, buying at the sale barn I maybe bidding against another person who would use the horse verses a kill buyer. So I try to buy directly from a kill buyer so I know I am for sure saving a horses life, and yes I end up giving more than sale barn price.
