It appears that folks are starting to receive notifications of interviews—congratulations! Just keep in mind that because you secured an interview (and hopefully an acceptance later on!) someone else did not. While I hope that all of you are excited about these opportunities starting to knock on your door, I ask on behalf of others in the group to be mindful of others during this part of the grad school process. By all means, share the good news, but remember to be sensitive to others! The interview process is a very exciting time, and I wish all of you so much luck in these coming months. In thinking about that, however, I want to share something with those of you who will not receive an invitation or an acceptance to your top school. I was unable to attend my top choice. In fact, due to a couple of reasons, I had to attend the institution on the bottom of my list. I was so disappointed that things didn’t work out the way I wanted them to. Little did I know, however, how much of a blessing this opportunity would be. Not only have I met some truly incredible people and made some wonderful friends, but I love my program! It was the perfect fit for me. So much good has come from this experience, including a full-time position halfway through my degree, and I’m confident that wouldn’t have happened if things worked out the way I thought they were “supposed” to. I couldn’t imagine myself in any other situation. Sometimes life throws things at us that we don’t think we will like or think we want, but then turns out better than we could have hoped for. I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a reason, and the grad school interview and acceptance process is no different. While I’m not big on buzzwords and phrases, I think “trust the process” is very a very accurate and truthful way to describe the next couple of months for everyone applying to grad school. For my current SAgrads in the group—do you have any other words of wisdom or advice for someone in this position? Good luck to everyone else finalizing applications and starting a new semester over the next couple of weeks!
