It appears that there was a shooting last night at Town East Mall, - TopicsExpress

It appears that there was a shooting last night at Town East Mall, and that is unfortunate. Ill get more details in the morning. However, Ive already seen several nasty and disrespectful comments about Ghetto Mesquite! Quite frankly, Im fed up with such talk--especially from current and former Mesquite residents! So Id like to set the record straight: According to the Miriam-Webster Dictionary, Ghetto is defined as: merriam-webster/.../ghetto a part of a city in which members of a particular group or race live usually in poor conditions. : the poorest part of a city. The term Ghetto originated from the 1500s when the Venetians required the Jews to live in a sub quarter of Venice. Later the Germans did the same but worse to the Jews, putting them collectively Ghettos. In more modern times, we see what are considered Ghettos typically in large urban areas where there are concentrated areas of low income housing, heavy poverty, and large minority populations. Obviously and historically, Ghettos have not been places where dignity or the American Dream have flourished. So again, let me be clear--to all those who throw the term out so loosely--MESQUITE, TEXAS IS NOT A GHETTO!!!!! And to those who call us that--are being very disrespectful and hateful and very unneighborly! First of all, I feel at times when Mesquite is called Ghetto, its racially motivated! Im not going to judge anyones heart, but its certainly not a kind statement. And are people under the illusion that there is no crime in some of the more rural, new communities that older suburb neighbors move to? Sometimes some of the biggest meth or drug operations are based out of the nice little quiet communities some think are paradise--only to discover that every community has its struggles. Ive witnessed my share of bad behavior and crime in Mesquite over the past few years--and Ive witnessed every skin color and ethnicity involved including Anglo/White--and Ive equally see every skin color nearby detest and dislike such behavior. Sadly, folks rarely even give notice to the fact that most real crime including shootings are done by those who dont live in Mesquite! Mesquite is a great city! Im a better person because I grew up here and because I stayed here. We have our areas of poverty and struggle. We dont have walls built to keep others out. We have our areas of opportunity. We are no different than thousands of communities all over America! Mesquite is America! But we are also doing great things and blessings are on the horizon. So to those who would take advantage of unfortunate incidents in Mesquite, please, dont trash our hometown because of a difficult moment. Instead , please support us as many of us are trying to move our hometown forward! If Mesquite was or is your hometown--love it and support it! Pray for our community and our country. Love your neighbor! Bruce Archer Mesquite City Council Place 3
