It came out in 2007 but we hadnt seen Herzogs doc about Antarctica and people living there, ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, until today. Its beautifully photographed with much done in the strange world under the ice in the Ross Sea, in frozen volcanic fumaroles, in scientific camps. One of the most intriguing parts is how many *eccentrics* he turned up there. Some of the scientists, many of the day to day workers, unusual people drawn to an unusual place. Some of them quite odd. And then there are the penguins who wander off from the rest and walk toward their deaths in the mountains for no reason anyone understands. Its an eerie film, and fascinating...
