It comes with great pleasure and pride that I was able to write the final chapter on a buck that Ive known for 3 years now....Gimp. Nicole and I first saw this buck on her first deer hunt 3 years ago. He was a small basket rack 8-point back then. He was limping as he approached us and I noticed he had an injured right front foot. He spotted us as Nicole was getting the gun up and ran off. I didnt think too much about it at the time. Last year while bowhunting in December, I saw a great looking buck with a doe...limping. When I reviewed the footage and took a closer look at the buck I couldnt believe my eyes. It was him! I hunted him hard the remainder of the year but wasnt able to get it done. I put out corn and Antler Xtreme all winter as supplemental feed hoping to help him through the tough, cold conditions. I got plenty of pics from my Browning Trail Cameras on the feed. As the temps rose and the foliage began to grow, he disappeared. It wasnt until August that I got another picture of him. My hunt for Gimp began September 15 with no sightings. In early November I got another picture of him over a mock scrape set up. I set up on him two days later. I had my first encounter with him that evening when he came to check the mock scrape. I was setup in a blind because it was raining and I had to keep my camera equipment dry. I used a buck decoy to hopefully draw him into range. The plan was working great until a doe began to blow at my decoy setup. Gimp was at 60 yards and closing before an about face back to the woods. Between that encounter and gun season Gimp narrowly avoided me on several occasions. Two days ago, Nicole and I were hunting together and Gimp made an appearance. He offered me a marginal shot that I chose not to take. I wasnt about to wound this deer. Finally, today it all came together and I was able to harvest Gimp who has become an absolute legend of buck on my parents farm. I couldnt be more proud of this buck. Thanks to Nicole for helping me get this deer. I would wake her up at 4:00am, as she would drive me around to the back side of the farm so I wouldnt spook any deer going in. Its the reason why I was able to make it happen this morning.
