It doesnt matter if youre 13 or 43, getting caught in a lie by your parents stinks. The trick is to make it just on the line of being believable, and if you go too far youre instantly screwed. When my mom said that she and dad wanted to come visit us during Fall Break in October, I naturally said that we already had a vacation scheduled. Then she asked where and the first thing my mind went to was a cabin, but last time we went there, my mom said it sounded like fun (I think I used the plot from the Bill Murray movie Meatballs but I cant be sure at this point) and shed like to go. So I knew I needed another place, but all my mind reverted to was old Bugs Bunny cartoons, so I said Albuquerque. So she said Really? Albuquerque? With the kids? because she knows me. And heres where I went too far, I said Oh yeah, theyre really excited about it. Yknow they learned about it when studying state capitals and since its driving distance, I figured what the heck. Do you see the mistake? She did. Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico. Youre not going anywhere. I tried to blame it on the Oklahoma public school system, but in the end, my parents are visiting us at Fall Break. The lesson, you really do need to know your capitals.
