It feels rather surreal to know that I am officially retired after 32 years in education. Thats why the Salvador Dali clock seems right at home on my mantel (a gift from some students--thank you Tori, Adam, Kyra, James, and Emily). Yesterday was bittersweet. Emphasis on sweet! I had to change my Christmas wish list to include a trip to a fat farm to get rid of the weight Im going to gain thanks to the cake, cupcakes, cookies, chocolate and other goodies students brought. You guys are too sweet (pun intended). I am going to miss a lot of things about teaching: 1) that look on a students face when something finally clicks and he/she understands, 2) the creativity of students who are able to let their voices come through even when they are working in a foreign language, 3) the excitement of students who have just rocked a performance of a play or won recognition at the STLP competition. Yes, there are a few things I wont miss: 1) staying up to 2:00 am to finish grading papers or grading papers in general, 2) the narrow-minded attitude that everyone should just speak English and that learning to speak Spanish is a waste of time, 3) Google Translate or any other electronic translator, 4) the expectation of getting something for doing nothing. Anyway, today I start a new beginning. What does the future hold? Adventure I hope!
