It had become very cloudy, all the hills were heavy with them and clouds were piling up in every direction [SE HABÍA PUESTO MUY NUBLADO, LAS NUBES SE APILABAN EN TODAS DIRECCIONES Y SE CERRABAN EN TORNO A CADA CERRO]. It was spitting with rain and there wasn’t a blue patch anywhere; the sun had set in darkness and the trees were aloof and distant [ESTABA CHISPEANDO Y NO HABÍA NI UN RETAZO DE AZUL POR NINGÚN LADO; EL SOL SE HABÍA PUESTO EN LA OSCURIDAD Y LOS ÁRBOLES ESTABAN APARTADOS Y DISTANTES]. There is an old palm tree that stood out against the darkening sky and whatever light there was, was held by it; the river-beds were silent, their red sand moist; but there was no song; the birds had become silent, taking shelter among the thick leaves [HAY UNA VIEJA PALMERA QUE RESALTABA CONTRA EL CIELO QUE (SE) OSCURECÍA Y CAPTABA TODA LA (POCA) LUZ QUE HABÍA; LOS LECHOS DE LOS RÍOS ESTABAN EN SILENCIO, MOJADA SU ARENA COLORADA; PERO NO HABÍA NINGUNA CANCIÓN; LOS PÁJAROS HABÍAN ENMUDECIDO, AMPARADOS EN LA ESPESURA DEL FOLLAJE]. A breeze was blowing from north-east and with it came more dark clouds and a spattering of rain but it hadn’t begun in earnest; that would come later in gathering fury [ESTABA SOPLANDO UNA BRISA DEL NORESTE Y CON ELLA VENÍAN MÁS NUBES Y UNA SALPICADURA DE LLUVIA PERO NO SE HABÍA LARGADO EN SERIO… ESO LLEGARÍA MÁS TARDE, CON FURIA CRECIENTE]. And the road in front was empty; it was red, rough, and sandy and the dark hills looked down on it; it was a pleasant road with hardly any cars and the villagers with their ox-drawn carts going from one village to another; they were dirty, skeleton-thin, in rags, with their stomachs drawn in, but they were wiry and enduring; they had lived like that for centuries and no government is going to change all this overnight [Y EL CAMINO DE ENFRENTE ESTABA VACÍO; ERA COLORADO, DESPAREJO, ARENOSO, DOMINADO POR LOS CERROS OSCUROS; ERA UN CAMINO AGRADABLE POR DONDE CASI NO PASABAN AUTOS PERO SÍ VILLEROS (ALDEANOS) CON SUS CARROS DE BUEYES QUE IBAN DE VILLA (ALDEA) EN VILLA; IBAN SUCIOS, ESQUELÉTICOS, HARAPIENTOS, CON LOS ESTÓMAGOS METIDOS PARA ADENTRO, PERO ERAN FIBROSOS Y RESISTENTES; HABÍAN VIVIDO SIGLOS Y SIGLOS ASÍ Y NINGÚN GOBIERNO VA A CAMBIAR ESO DE LA NOCHE A LA MAÑANA]. But these people had a smile, though their eyes were weary [PERO ESTA GENTE TENÍA UNA SONRISA, PESE AL CANSANCIO DE SUS OJOS]. They could dance after a heavy day’s labour and they had fire in them, they were not hopelessly beaten down [PODÍAN DANZAR (BAILAR) DESPUÉS DE SU JORNADA DE INTENSO TRABAJO Y TENÍAN FUEGO ADENTRO, NO LOS DOBLEGABA LA DESESPERANZA]. The land had not had good rains for many years and this may be one of those fortunate years which may bring more food for them and fodder for their thin cattle [LA COMARCA NO HABÍA TENIDO BUENAS LLUVIAS EN MUCHOS AÑOS Y ÉSTE PODÍA LLEGAR A SER UNO DE AQUELLOS AÑOS AFORTUNADOS QUE PODÍAN PRODIGAR MÁS COMIDA PARA ELLOS Y FORRAJE PARA SU FLACO GANADO]. And the road went on and joined at the mouth of the valley the big road with few buses and cars [Y EL CAMINO SEGUÍA Y EN LA BOCA DEL VALLE SE UNÍA A LA RUTA POR LA QUE PASABAN ALGUNOS COLECTIVOS Y AUTOS]. And on this road, far away were the cities with their filth, industries, rich houses, temples and dull minds [Y SOBRE ESTA RUTA, LEJOS, ESTABAN LAS CIUDADES CON SU MUGRE, SUS INDUSTRIAS, MANSIONES, TEMPLOS Y MENTES EMBOTADAS]. But here on this open road, there was solitude and the many hills, full of age and indifference [PERO AQUÍ, EN ESTE CAMINO ABIERTO, HABÍA SOLITUD Y MUCHOS CERROS, LLENOS DE EDAD E INDIFERENCIA]. Meditation is the emptying of the mind of all thought, for thought and feeling dissipate energy; they are repetitive, producing mechanical activities which are a necessary part of existence [MEDITAR ES QUE LA MENTE SE VACÍE DE TODO PENSAMIENTO, PUESTO QUE (EL) PENSAMIENTO Y (EL) SENTIMIENTO DISIPAN ENERGÍA; SON REPETITIVOS, PRODUCEN ACTIVIDADES MECÁNICAS QUE SON UNA PARTE NECESARIA DE LA EXISTENCIA]. But they are only part, and thought and feeling cannot possibly enter into the immensity of life [PERO SÓLO SON PARTE(S), (EL) PENSAMIENTO Y (EL) SENTIMIENTO NO PUEDEN DE NINGUNA MANERA INGRESAR EN LA INMENSIDAD DE LA VIDA]. Quite a different approach is necessary, not the path of habit, association and the known; there must be freedom from these [SE NECESITA UN ENFOQUE BIEN DISTINTO, NO EL SURCO DEL HÁBITO, LA ASOCIACIÓN Y LO CONOCIDO; HAY QUE ESTAR LIBRES DE ESTO]. Meditation is the emptying of the mind of the known [MEDITAR ES QUE LA MENTE SE VACÍE DE LO CONOCIDO]. It cannot be done by thought or by the hidden prompting of thought, nor by desire in the form of prayer, nor through the self-effacing hypnotism of words, images, hopes and vanities [ESTO NO PUEDE HACERLO EL PENSAMIENTO NI LA VELADA INCITACIÓN DEL PENSAMIENTO, NI EL DESEO EN FORMA DE PLEGARIA, NI MEDIANTE EL PERFIL BAJO DEL HIPNOTISMO DE (LAS) PALABRAS, IMÁGENES, ESPERANZAS Y VANIDADES]. All these have to come to an end, easily, without effort and choice, in the flame of awareness [TODO ESTO TIENE QUE ACABAR, CON FACILIDAD, SIN ESFUERZO NI ELECCIÓN, EN LA LLAMA DE LA TOMA DE CONCIENCIA]. And there walking on that road, there was complete emptiness of the brain, and the mind was free of all experience, the knowing of yesterday, though a thousand yesterdays had been [Y ALLÍ, ANDANDO POR ESE CAMINO, HABÍA VACÍO TOTAL DEL CEREBRO, LA MENTE ESTABA LIBRE DE TODA EXPERIENCIA —EL SABER DE AYER— SI BIEN HABÍA HABIDO MIL AYERES]. Time, the thing of thought, had stopped; literally there was no movement before and after; there was no going or arriving or standing still [EL TIEMPO, LA COSA DEL PENSAMIENTO, HABÍA PARADO; LITERALMENTE NO HABÍA MOVIMIENTO ANTES NI DESPUÉS; NO EXISTÍA UN IR NI UN LLEGAR NI UN QUEDARSE QUIETO]. Space as distance was not; there were the hills and bushes but not as high and low [NO EXISTÍA EL ESPACIO COMO DISTANCIA; AHÍ ESTABAN LOS CERROS Y LOS ARBUSTOS PERO NO COMO ALTO Y BAJO]. There was no relationship with anything but there was an awareness of the bridge and the passer-by [NO HABÍA RELACIÓN CON NADA PERO HABÍA UN DARSE CUENTA DEL PUENTE Y (D)EL TRANSEÚNTE]. The totality of the mind, in which is the brain with its thoughts and feelings, was empty; and because it was empty, there was energy, a deepening and widening energy without measure [LA TOTALIDAD DE LA MENTE —EN CUYO SENO ESTÁ EL CEREBRO, CON SUS PENSAMIENTOS Y SENTIMIENTOS— ESTABA VACÍA]. All comparison, measurement belong to thought and so to time [TODA COMPARACIÓN, (TODA) MEDICIÓN PERTENECEN AL PENSAMIENTO Y POR CONSIGUIENTE AL TIEMPO]. The otherness was the mind without time; it was the breath of innocence and immensity [LA OTREDAD ERA LA MENTE SIN TIEMPO; ERA EL HÁLITO (ALIENTO, RESPIRACIÓN) DE LA INOCENCIA Y LA INMENSIDAD]. Words are not reality; they are only means of communication but they are not the innocence and the immeasurable [LAS PALABRAS NO SON (LA) REALIDAD; SÓLO SON MEDIOS DE COMUNICACIÓN PERO NO SON LA INOCENCIA Y LO IN(CON)MENSURABLE].
