It had hardly been a couple boring days back in Mysore after my ride to Bhutan; the itch to jump on a motorcycle and ride again had started to consume me. Im quite the weak minded creature when to comes to resisting an impulse to ride! With two days on my hands, before I set off to meet my little sister, and a ride anything less than a thousand kilometres seeming worthless, Rameshwaram along with Dhanushkodi seemed like the most ideal destination! Till the early sixties, Dhanushkodi was a small yet prosperous fishing town; and according to the locals it was a much bigger town then Rameshwarm with a sizeable population. Situated the eastern most cost of Tamilnadu, the town was just twenty plus kilometres away from Sri Lanka. Close enough to see lights from the city of Jaffna on a clear night. The 1964 Cyclone of Rameshwarma, the most powerful (A super Cyclone) one to have hit the coast of Sri Lanka spelt and inevitable doom to the little town of Dhanushkodi. Destroying, roads, railway infrastructure and pretty much every standing structure while claiming close to two thousand lives (Locals claim its much higher) the cyclone reduced Dhanushkodi to a ghost town, which it still continues to be. Another significance thats attached to these parts is the belief that Lord Rama crossed over to Lanka from here; the floating rocks and the satellite imagery of the infamous Rama Sethu are presented as evidence to prove the historical genuineness of the Ramayan. The Rameshwarm temple also holds great significance to itself, but I was presses for time to visit it. Probably another time. The ride for the most bit was uneventful till about fifty kilometres from Raneshwarma; from where it starts seeming like the Keywest of India. For those of you who know not what Im talking about, it simply means a scenic ride on narrow roads with crazy ass tourist traffic. In short if you are hard pressed for time or money to visit Keywest in Florida, you can easily compensate with a ride or drive to Rameshwarm. Just as frustrating! A few pictures to sum up my ride ... #Ride #Dhanushkodi #Rameshwaram
