It had to happen. Last night at about 9 pm I went down into the cellar for a screwdriver to adjust a cupboard door and found - A FLOOD. The cellar has never flooded before. Water was pouring in down the steps. It WAS raining. Emergency action needed. Rig a cover to divert rainwater away from steps. Pick up all our precious spuds in paper sacks. Lift anything else that was in immediate danger. Start mopping and sweeping. Move practically everything in the cellar and put down duckboards and battens. Empty boxes from Australia and discover only 3 damp pieces of clothing and the corner of a duvet - which we have been looking for for months anyway! By 1115 all was quiet after digging the diversion ditch away from the steps and making a dam by the door at the bottom of the steps. Shower and bed!!!
