It happened so fast. The bullet split through the canvas of open air, ripping away the very fabric of reality as it flew. In mere seconds- every voice, every foot step, every movement was silenced. All that remained were soundless witnesses. Everyones attention grafted onto the figure held in my arms. A boy. My boy. He gazed up at me, and touched his hand to my cheek. See Daddy, He winced, but still smiling. Just like Superman. I couldnt speak. My head was nothing less than a barrage of thoughts fighting to release themselves from my lips, but nothing became audible. A burn quickly seized my eyes, spilling a wave of tears down my face. Am I in trouble, daddy? No, The words captured me. Youre not in trouble. I looked up at the man in front of us, the barrel in his hand still smoking from the shot. He resembled the man I knew, but he wasnt him. The man I knew had never killed. He could have never taken away something so precious. Whoever this man was- he was someone else entirely. Finally I could see the blood. A red stain pierced into the center of the big red S on his shirt. It spilled down the side, escaping to the ground in heavy drips. Edwin.. My body trembled. Please... No.. Its okay daddy. His eyes blinked slowly. Im just a little sleepy. When I wake up we can play as long as you want. Promise. I know. We will. I hugged him close. Suddenly, my head began to have flashes. I felt myself reliving every painful moment. Holding my new born baby boy. Teaching his first steps. Riding his bicycle on his fourth birthday... His birthday. So close. In just eighteen more days... He would have been ten. I couldnt lose him now. Never. Please God... Take all you want... Just not him. Goodnight daddy. I shut my eyes and cried. But even though I didnt see it, the feeling remained the same. Slowly, I felt my joy, my very essence, seep out of my body. Just as the lights left his eyes, part of my soul went with them. He was gone.
