It happened today in British history – 12th July 1450: John Cade was caught and killed – On the 2nd or 3rd of July 1450, John Cade’s rebellion entered London. It began as a peasant’s protest against heavy taxation and seizure of the land by nobles. Unfortunately, they soon lost the support of a sympathetic City after killing the sheriff of Kent. Cade was then caught and killed on this very day. 1543: Henry VIII married Catherine Parr – Henry married his sixth and final wife in 1543. She survived until his death in 1547. 1794: Nelson lost his right eye – Admiral Nelson lost the use of his right eye on this day in 1794, during the siege of Calvi in Corsica. 1965: First comprehensive schools – The Labour government began its experiment with comprehensive schools on this day in 1965, ending the two-tier system of grammar and secondary schools. 1964: Première of A Hard Day’s Night – The Beatles’s first movie, A Hard Day̱s Night, premièred in London on this day in 1964. 1974: Shankly quit Liverpool – Bill Shankly quit his beloved Liverpool on this day in 1974, retiring at the early age of 58 after 15 years in charge.
