It happened today in British history – 2nd July 1450: John Cade’s rebellion – John Cade’s rebellion entered London. It began as a peasant’s protest against heavy taxation, the seizure of land by nobles, and corruption in the courts. They soon lost the support of the City after killing the sheriff of Kent. Cade was then caught and killed on the 12th. 1644: Battle of Marston Moor – The Battle of Marston Moor was fought on this day in 1644, when Oliver Cromwell’s cavalry charge routed the Royalist northern army. King Charles’ had lain under seige in York, when they were relieved by the timely arrival of Prince Rupert. Their reprieve was short-lived, however, when he was soundly beaten in the field. 1819: Factory Act was passed – The Factory Act was passed on this day in 1819, banning the employment of children under nine, and limiting the hours of those under 16 to less than 12 per day. 1982: Roy Jenkins became leader of the SDP – Roy Jenkins was elected leader of the SDP on this day in 1982. 2005: Live 8 concert – Bob Geldof organised the Live 8 concert on this day in 2005, as a follow-up to his Live Aid concert in 1985. But instead of raising money from the public, its aim this time was to pressure the world’s richest nations into giving poverty relief to the poor. When the G8 met at Gleneagles six days later they agreed to both cancel the debts of 18 poorest countries, and donate an aid package worth fifty billion dollars.
