It happened today in British history – 5th July 1295: Scotland formed an alliance with France – Following Edward I’s attempt to install his own man as Scottish King three years before, Scotland agitated for their own. They formed the ‘Auld Alliance’ with France, but were defeated in battle. Edward then confiscated their coronation stone (the Stone of Scone), and dragged it back to London. 1928: Women’s voting age reduced to 21 – On this day in 1928, the voting age for women was reduced from 30 to 21. 1954: First daily TV news programme – The BBC aired their first-ever daily news programme on this day in 1954. The 20-minute bulletin was read by Richard Bake. The previous programmes had all consisted of news reels which had been prepared days in advance. 1956: Clean Air Act passed – London smogs became a thing of the past on this day in 1956, when the Clean Air Act was passed in Parliament. The great smog of 1952 was thought to have claimed over 4,000 lives. 1965: Maria Callas’ last performance – Reknowned opera singer Maria Callas gave her last public performance on this day in 1965, singing Tosca in London’s Covent Garden. 1969: Rolling Stones gig at Hyde Park – Three days after the death of Brian Jones, the Rolling Stones performed a free concert at Hyde Park. Mick Jagger released hundreds of butterflies into the sky to commemorate his death. 1997: World’s first cloned animal – Dolly the sheep was born on this day in 1997 – the world’s very first cloned animal. She was created at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, by inserting DNA from a single cell into an egg, and then implanting it into a surrogate mother. The resulting ewe was an exact genetic match to the animal who gave the cell. She was put down in 2003 after suffering from lung disease, and has now been stuffed and put on display at the National Museum of Scotland.
