It has been a staple of my drinking age life; the Blue Spark has closed it’s doors forever. I have experienced good times and bad, and everything in between probably from every stool in that joint. I have had best friends work behind the bar who treated me extremely well. I have played song after depressing song from the Juke Box when I felt extremely bad. However, one of the best memories I experienced was when I was enjoying the music on stage. The walls littered with vintage images have heard enough of tunes from local to famous artists in the last decade to last a lifetime. Call it ironic, call it poetic, call it whatever you want, but the staff at the Spark announced it’s closing it’s doors on Open Mic Night; A tradition that has been going on for 15 years. Rocky a newbie who wanted to play open mic was shocked like everyone else today, but felt bittersweet when told he could play the last song on stage. Yeah, it sucks, and this once bustling business downtown will fulfill Spokane’s theme, another empty spot. But, even though the Spark has closed it’s doors forever, every time I walk past 1st and Howard I will never forget the good times and bad that went on behind those glass doors.
