It has been an incredible week coming together with the labour movement in BC. First at the #UniforBC Regional Council, then in the house of labour for the #BCfed14 Convention. Its also a very special thing to have finished the week at an event put on by the Institute for the Humanities at Simon Fraser University featuring Ramy Essam. His music continues to be the soundtrack for the ongoing Egyptian revolution, in spite of his forced exile. On Thursday, Ramy Essam performed at a benefit concert on unceded Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory/Burnaby Mountain for the land defenders who are resisting the Kinder Morgan pipeline. His music adapted fluidly to this connected struggle. Then by Friday, facing the lights of the waterfront--only a short distance from the convention centre, where moments earlier workers from across the province were mapping paths of resistance and solidarity--Ramy Essam was discussing revolution, music, and performance with a small group that had gathered for the evening. From the Square to the Waterfront and on, the conversation turns to Bread, Freedom, and Social Justice. youtube/watch?v=Y9Re4zJkoQM
