It has been five years since Mumbai was brutally attacked by Laskhar -e-Tayebba’s 10 heavily armed terrorists hailing from Pakistan, who had sneaked into Mumbai via unguarded Arabian Sea on November 26, 2008. At least 164 people were killed and some 308 people were seriously injured in well coordinated attacks. Here are a few events related to the ghastly attack after the hanging of the lone terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab. 5 years after 2008 Mumbai terror attacks 1 On November 26, 2008: Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab along with nine Pakistani terrorists launched a bloody attack on multiple locations in south Mumbai. 2 On November 27, 2008: At around 1.30 am, Kasab was caught and placed under arrest. He was later admitted to Nair hospital. 3 On November 29, 2008: He gave a statement to police and confessed his role in unleashing attack. 4 On November 29, 2008: All places which were under siege were secured after 60 hours of gun battle in which nine terrorists were killed. The names of the slain terrorists were Nazir, Babar Imran alias Abu Aksa, Abu Ali, Abu Soheb, Bada Abdul Rehman, Abu Umar, Fahadullah, Abdul Rehman Chhota and Abu Ismail. 5 On November 30, 2008: Kasab confesses before police. 6 On December 27 and December 28, 2008: Identification parade was held. 7 On January 13, 2009: ML Tahaliyani was appointed Special Judge for 26/11 trial. 8 On January 16, 2009: Arthur Road Jail selected for Kasabs trial. 9 On February 5, 2009: Kasabs DNA samples matches with articles seized from fishing boat, Kuber. 10 On February 20 and 21, 2009: Kasab makes confession before Magistrate RV Sawant-Wagule. 11 On February 22, 2009: Ujjwal Nikam was appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor. 12 On February 25, 2009: Police filed chargesheet against Kasab and two others in Esplanade Metropolitan Court. 13 On April 15, 2009: Trial in 26/11 case begins. 14 On April 16, 2009: SG Abbas Kazmi was appointed as Kasabs lawyer. 15 On April 17, 2009: Kasab retracts from confession in court. 16 On April 20, 2009: Prosecution charges Kasab on 312 counts. 17 On May 6, 2009: Charges framed, Kasab charged on 86 counts, but denies charges. 18 On May 8, 2009: First eyewitness who had deposed, identifies Kasab. 19 On June 23, 2009: Non-bailable warrants were issued against 22, including Hafeez Saeed, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi. 20 On July 20, 2009: Kasab pleads guilty before Special Judge ML Tahaliyani. 21 On November 30, 2009: SG Abbas Kazmi removed as Ajmal Kasabs lawyer. 22 On December 1, 2009: KP Pawar officially replaces Kazmi. 23 On December 16, 2009: Prosecution completes case in the November 26 attacks. 24 On December 18, 2009: Kasab denies all charges. 25 On February 22, 2010: David Coleman Headley issue crops up in court 26 On February 23, 2010: Final argument commences from March 9 27 On April 6, 2010: Home Minister RR Patil discloses in Maharashtra legislature that the bodies of nine slain Pakistani terrorists were buried in January 2010, somewhere near Mumbai. He claims he was brainwashed, did not deserve the death sentence as he was very young. 44 On October 18, 2011: The Supreme Court admits Maharashtra appeal challenging the acquittal of Kasab associates Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin Ahmed. 45 On January 31, 2012: Kasab contends in Supreme Court stating that he was denied a free and fair trial. 46 On February 23, 2012: The Supreme Court views footage of Mumbai carnage, hears taped conversation of Kasab and his Pakistani handlers and among the 10 terrorists who carried out the attacks. 47 On April 25, 2012: After a marathon hearing of nearly 10 weeks, Supreme Court reserves its judgement. 48 On August 29, 2012: The Supreme Court upholds High Courts death sentence to Kasab. 49 In September, 2012: Kasab, through the Maharashtra Government, moves a mercy plea to the President of India. 50 On October 16, 2012: Central Government moves Supreme Court seeking rejection of Kasabs mercy plea. 51 On November 5, 2012: President rejects Kasabs mercy plea. 52 On November 21: Terrorist Kasab taken to Yerawada Central Jail in Pune, and secretly hanged, and later buried somewhere in the jail complex, in an operation scripted by State Home Minister RR Patil
