It has been the concern of many, including myself that the Merrick County Sheriff has in the past (prior to the primary election) as well as currently, campaigning on duty. It has been stated that any form of campaigning on duty, is illegal. It doesnt matter if it is in person, on the telephone, or on social media. If an elected official is on duty, in a uniform, or some resemblance of a uniform, or has his employees do the same, it is against state statue. Last night while I was campaigning, I was informed of an incident that a deputy (described in detail, and suspected to be Deputy John Ross Abold, opened the screen door upon seeing people gathered inside the house, and advised he had just come to tell them that the sheriff would appreciate their vote. Now granted, this was prior to the primary election, but the person I spoke with stated the deputy was in uniform and driving a marked patrol car. He also did not knock prior to entering, and let himself in. Is this the campaign tricks that I can suspect are going on now? I feel it gives a unfair advantage for an opponent to a current sheriff. This is why it is against state statue. Running as a write in is difficult enough without having to go up against unfair advantages. The above is one such incident. I have heard current deputies have spoken about me running as a write-in candidate is a joke, while on duty to people they have contact with. If this is their opinion, they are certainly entitled to it, just not while on duty. This is not a positive campaigning as the sheriff suggests he is doing.
