It has happened before and if they had the infrastructure and population we do now, millions would have died. December 16, 1811 - Magnitude ~7.5 January 23, 1812 - Magnitude ~ 7.3 February 7, 1812 - Magnitude ~ 7.5 If you go the USGS and read the timelines of other nearby quakes that happened before the big quake it looks very similar to what is going on. Not just here but worldwide there is an increase in seismic activity not seen for more than 100 years. Because we live in what is a boundary between to zones the land can be sheared forming crevasses (rift valley) we are by no means to be considered safe from earthquakes. All the experts agree it will happen, they cant say when. It is a hazard that concerns everybody and we are not prepared by earthquake proof infrastructure that places that have regular earth quakes have. There is broad agreement in the scientific community that a continuing concern exists for a major destructive earthquake in the New Madrid seismic zone. Many structures in Memphis, Tenn., St. Louis, Mo., and other communities in the central Mississippi River Valley region are vulnerable and at risk from severe ground shaking. This assessment is based on decades of research on New Madrid earthquakes and related phenomena by dozens of Federal, university, State, and consulting earth scientists. pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2009/3071/
