It has just dawned on me why Tolkien was not quite right when he wrote It wont do! over the entrance of Father Christmas, and later Greek gods in Narnia. Narnia is not a fully split off secondary world in the way Tolkien was constructing it in his mind. It is much closer to the world in a series which Diana Wynne Jones constructs: in order to have Christ in Narnia (Aslan) the walls between the walls must be thin, and there are therefore analogies to the other Gods--which Lewis as a good Platonist may have seen as being subsumed into Christ. Lewis also knew that Father Christmas was semi Pagan, a figure of the winter festival. Im not saying its perfect, but its not quite the rupture weve been taught to assume.
