It hurts me that, since this time last week we have run into more people in these cities, who were ready to give up or who have given up. Not people who were walking around looking sad, mad or frustrated. Im talking about people who are walking around looking like they have it all together: at work, well groomed, smiling...until...Until that moment, when you notice that there is a pause or a sigh after, How are you?, that comes from more than a bad cup of morning coffee. That moment when you say, no really---How are you? And they tell you they are tired of trying, life sucks, they dont know how much more of this they can take, theres nothing worth going on for, they feel like Robin Williams, understand his pain and darkness and have thought about or tried to end their lives. Im not surprised really that there are so many. Life is hard, people are cruel, and the world is mean. This post isnt to debate opinions on whether anyone who is depressed or having suicidal thoughts needs to just pray or needs to just go see a counselor...Nor do I want to debate whether people are suffering from a disease or making a choice. What I do want to bring to light is this: there are people around you, probably more than you realize who are frustrated, tired, angry, confused, without hope, empty, lost, lonely, depressed, and battling something--even the desire to live and go on...In spite of how they look or what you know about them or their situation. I do want to simply suggest that we are a little more aware of how we treat everyone you encounter. Are you genuinely asking those who work with you, are your friends, in contact with, you meet: how are you, hows life, are things ok?....Are you really listening when they respond and are you prepared for their real answers? Just something to think about...Instead of being quick to dismiss, not listening, not engaging fully, not paying attention, not taking them seriously or judging...Try to extend some simple kindness, an encouraging word or a good hug...one of those just may be life saving... #journeytofreedom
