It is 29th or 30th anniversary of a Labor Day experience that made us call Mother Nature by her first name. Mickie, myself and a friend hiked up over Ingalls Lake on glorious Saturday, taking scant notice if lenticular cloud over distant Mt. Rainier. Filled with energy, we climbed over boulders and camped at the far end of Ingalls Lake. There came a wakening boom in the middle of night, followed by a cloudburst. We huddled dry in my Goretex tent. Come morning, a cry from outside the tent, May I come in? We giggled. The cry was repeated with urgency. Our friend Don stood outside in his skivvies, his tent in an expanding puddle. The storm had let up just enough that I made it outside and heated some cocoa. Hypothermia was averted -- just barely. Our retreat over the rocks, as lightning battered west ridge of Mt. Stuart, gave definition to the word ignominious.
