It is André Greipels bad luck that he plies his trade in an era - TopicsExpress

It is André Greipels bad luck that he plies his trade in an era that has also featured the talents of Mark Cavendish, Marcel Kittel and… Simon Gerrans. The German was looking for his 15th win at the Tour Down Under, yet he was left dejected in second place when the Australian national champion snuck around him to take the opening stage by half a wheel. Kittel had also bested Greipel, in the Peoples Choice Classic criterium on Sunday — the younger mans turn of speed auguring well for his season ahead. On Tuesdays first stage Greipel worked well to stay with the front group over the final climb of the day, and the young Aussie sprinter Caleb Ewan also impressed. But perhaps Greipel had given too much; and perhaps he started his sprint too early on a finishing straight that sloped slightly uphill. His second place left him with his head hanging in disappointment, an all-too-familiar pose, while Gerranss surprise win (and intermediate time bonus) puts him firmly in the driving seat in what is notoriously a Tour decided on mere seconds. Garmin-Sharps Steele von Hoff completed the podium. #TDU Watch the final kilometre of Stage 1 → bit.ly/1bMRfjW
