It is April 1981, a historic meeting is underway between Deng Xiaoping, the powerful Chinese leader, and an Indian. The Sino-Indian relations are at its lowest point. The man from India is a scholar of Chinese studies, well versed in the Chinese language and a friend of Deng Xiaoping. Important bilateral issues are discussed including the arming of the insurgents in Assam. Assuring the Indian friend that any insurgent found in the Chinese territory would be handed over to Border police, he asks “Anything else?”. The Indian grabbed the opportunity to ask for reopening of the Kailash Mansarovar, one of the most holy pilgrimage sites for the Hindus.
