It is #DiscJockeyDay. And as a former DJ, I have a great deal of respect for most of them. For about 80% of them, it is a labor of love, because not everyone is banking eight figures like Stern. I worked in a restaurant, in addition to my radio job to make ends meet. And thats why I got into TV, because I wanted to eat and pay the rent. One of my radio influences growing up was RON CHAPMAN. Living in Northeast Texas, I could pick up Rons show in the morning on 103.7 KVIL in Dallas. I always thought his timing, humor, promotions, and his delivery were always spot on. He began his career as Irving Harrigan as part of the team of Charlie & Harrigan on KLIF (then at 1190 AM). Then he would go on to host his own TV show called Sumpn Else, which was like a local DFW version of AMERICAN BANDSTAND. In 1969, he became the morning man for KVIL, which is a position he would hold until 2001. Then he moved down the hall to sister station KLUV for five years before retiring. After retirement, he would become the regular fill-in for Paul Harveys News & Commentary. He suffered a stroke not too long ago, but my understanding is he is recovering just fine. Miss hearing his show every morning and KVIL hasnt been the same since he left. Thanks for all the memories, Ron and being a great influence on me, and many others in the radio business. And thank you to all of my brothers and sisters, who are still doing this and putting up with the corporate radio world. I know thats one reason Ron wanted to retire. https://youtube/watch?v=ChSpS0MZTpE
