It is NASAs first mission dedicated to studying carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that is the primary human contributor to climate change. The half-ton OCO-2 spacecraft built by Orbital Sciences holds a single instrument that will use reflected sunlight to measure where carbon dioxide is being released and also absorbed — the so-called sources and sinks — across the globe over varying seasons and annual cycles.
