It is NOT TOO LATE to add a SECOND HALF course: Below is a course description for a second-eight week course. It is TR 2:30-5:00 PM: SOC 371 This course provides an overview of themes, questions, and concepts that serve as a foundation to many sociological debates and research. It specifically focuses on the key ideas that have emerged out of the works of the most important figures in the development of sociology: Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Emile Durkheim. The first two-thirds of the semester will be devoted to familiarizing students with the ideas of these three figures. The last third of the semester will focus on contemporary theoretical developments that draw on their ideas and concepts. We examine sociological reflection on contemporary U.S. political culture, Neo-Weberian theory on bureaucracies and organizations, and Neo-Marxist theory on the persistence and reproduction of capitalism. Secondarily, the course examines briefly the intersection of psychology and sociology by introducing students to the thought of Herbert Blumer and G.H. Mead, who developed the tradition of symbolic interactionism.
