It is a beautiful Wednesday in Water Valley and Dixie has a rad plate lunch for yall: bacon-wrapped chicken with ginger and scallions, her amazing pasta salad, and butter-beans. Soup is curried yellow squash and dessert is HOT caramel apple pie Sunday served with vanilla ice cream, caramel, strawberry, and chocolate sauces, and toasted coconut. Yesterday some British tourists left Oxford to eat lunch with us. This was deeply thrilling to me because I love listening to British people talk. But their presence is also a testament to the power of good food. Its been three years today since Dixie came to work in a kitchen with skillets from Freds and a stove from the hardware store (I consider this a testament to my charming personality). In between sandwiches, burgers, and plate lunches, shes served shrimp and grits, watermelon seafood cioppino, mussels, crepes, fried quail, and ladled out about 25,000 bowls of soup. She gets to work in the dark, refuses to work weekends, and makes the worlds best meatloaf. She now has a real stove named Lola. Dixie gets her name in magazines and her picture taken pretty regularly now, but what she likes the most is feeding yall. Come on down and tell her thanks for being here! Cheers, Alexe
