It is a cheerless day today with the passing of Phil Hughes. One of the great appeals of sport is that it allows us to indulge our competitive, abrasive sides in what is ultimately a fun and enjoyable way. In a manner of speaking, when we pay to go see a game, it is like paying to go to the threatre. The sportsmen are performing on a stage for our consumption as fans, as much as for themselves. So even though this was of course a freak accident, and no one is to blame; in a way, every sportsfan feels some responsibility for the fact that a young life has been taken in its prime. RIP Phil.
