It is a common understanding within Christianity that the grace of God is indispensable because the law of God is inflexible ... & this is true, so far as it goes. Consider, however, that it is also because the glory of God is unapproachable, the righteousness of God is immeasurable & the holiness of God is infinite. Scripture teaches us that even light is not pure enough to approach God ... why not? Because the created has no right before the Creator. He has no obligation to entertain our existence EXCEPT what He has placed upon Himself. Gods grace IS that obligation which He has placed upon Himself. The elect angels are sustained in His presence, not because they are sinless (though they are), but because He keeps them in that state for His purpose & pleasure. We are compelled to come before the throne of grace with boldness because He has, in Himself, opened that place of communion with us ... not because we are worthy - for we are not - but because He is pleased to do so as it fulfills His purpose ... to demonstrate the kindness of His grace. If I were able, as God demands of Job in Job 38-42, to quit me like a man & stand myself before Him wrapped in glory as He does, then I MIGHT be able to claim some right to stand in His presence - a king to a king ... but I cannot. He is God & I am not. He sustains me & I bring nothing of value to Him. I require His grace & He mercifully extends grace to one who deserves none of it.
