It is a fundamental right of every nation-state to aspire to become a power, a regional power, a global power, or a superpower. But to do so solely on the basis of raw strength and burgeoning indicators is to inflate a poisonous balloon without expecting it to burst. India cannot hope of becoming a superpower unless it resolves its internal quandaries, most important of which are the helplessness and hapless state of its minorities, the cross-sectional income inequality that pervades the Indian economy, and the regressive traditions and customs that put many question marks on the status of India as a strong, secular, progressive and democratic confederation.
