It is a joy to rescue a mare who is in foal from going to - TopicsExpress

It is a joy to rescue a mare who is in foal from going to slaughter. To give that mare a second chance and to give her foal a first chance. But what so many people do not see, is when you have a rescue horse that you have had for many years, and you see the decline in their health it breaks your heart. When you have done all you can and it does not work then you call in the vet to check everything out. After 13 years of rescue but 50 yrs of horse ownership, you see a lot. I must say my heart is breaking over CB. She is one of the sweetest TBs I have ever encountered. She was once on the track and broke her right hind leg, it healed the way it healed, but has never hindered her. We rescued her as someone wanted to utilize her as a brood mare. Why why why would someone want to breed a horse that cannot bare weight on all four legs and then to add the weight of a foal. Sheesh...CB has ceased to amaze us through the years when she would lope on three bending legs and buck. Obviously it has never bothered her. She has had a dedicated sponsor for many years Susan V., I see some signs that we have had occur with some of our Sr. horses that now are no longer with us, and that is Cushing Disease. She has a couple of the symptoms, the non shedding of winter coat, weight loss. No matter what you feed it does not help. She has had her teeth checked and all is well in that department. She is 33 years young, and we will do whatever we humanly can do for her. My heart is heavy tonight as I do get nervous of the unknown. But, I will reiterate, we will do whatever it takes to make it right for CB.
