It is a philosophical question that has floated upon the public - TopicsExpress

It is a philosophical question that has floated upon the public consciousness for—well—at least as long as I have been alive. It is commonly understood to be a question that presents two equally plausible viewpoints and leaves the impression that it is essentially impossible to determine the correct answer. In fact, this question may have played a crucial role in the overall view of society that, in the end, there are really no correct answers, no truths, just good questions. Of the two choices, one is animate, one is only potentially so. Is life the more powerful idea or, perhaps, it is the potential of life which has the greater appeal. But if we leave the world of abstract philosophy and apply a lick of common sense, it is pretty obvious that this question is neither difficult nor even a good question. And this conclusion concerning the validity of the question is not dependent on which of the two major competing worldviews one possesses on the origins of life. We have been baffled by a question that should have never really even been asked. The answer is plain. The chicken came first. Can we consider the matter settled?
