It is a sad fact of life that those who engage in scientific research can be violently targeted by some with a perceived sense of moral superiority. Last year, the University of Milan’s animal facility lost years worth of work after animal rights activists released or relabeled the model organisms. These attacks aren’t as rare as you may think. Scientists at UCLA who work on vaccinations, climate change, embryonic stem cells, and animal models have been victims of many offenses, including vandalism, death threats, firebombs, shootings, and incendiary devices. The scientists themselves aren’t the sole targets; their families and neighbors can be threatened as well. The scientific community at UCLA is fighting back against these acts of terror by organizing a Pro-Test for Science. At 10:15 am on Saturday, February 15, a group of scientists and supporters will be counter-demonstrating those who would see these violent acts continue. The Pro-Test organizers are hoping to get a big crowd again this year, so if this is a cause that you support, please show up to lend your voice and stand up for science!
