It is after much consideration that I am making this statement - TopicsExpress

It is after much consideration that I am making this statement tonight. Upon attending a UGSS meeting earlier this evening, one to which I was invited by an Executive member, I took a seat away from the table since I didn’t know how the seating arrangements were organized. As a result, I sat away from the actual elected body and a young lady, who seemed rather surprised at my presence asked “wuh yu doin hay?” I was very much surprised at the manner in which an elected official was questioning my presence (which I have no problem with by the way). I however responded with a simple, “Excuse me?” to which she once again, with a queer look asked, “wa you come here fuh?” Sadly, I asked her to repeat herself, to convince myself that she was nothing short of unprofessional. As I predicted, she did the same. So I said, “ask your VP” and left to join the table after I was requested to. To my amusement again, another lad would turn to me and say, “eh, yuh finally mek it up boy” in a sarcastic tone. With a smile, I brushed it off because his position was one similar to what I rejected by the same body. So I took my seat. While his words did no damage because of what I’m exposed to, I can’t say another student wouldn’t have felt offended by those remarks. The rest of the evening went well however. The sad reality is this, it is not the first time students are experiencing this kind of behavior by those whom are supposed to be deemed as elected officials. My contention is that if you guys push in hard work, but remain in a position where your members can’t speak or relate to students in an appropriate manner, you wouldn’t have achieved anything. Remember, a position doesn’t make you better than the students who put you there.
