It is already Wednesday! Do I ever enjoy short weeks! This week is Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) week and it will be short and sweet! A GIC is an investment security sold by Canadian banks and trust companies. They are often bought for retirement plans because they provide a low-risk fixed rate of return. The principal is at risk only if the bank defaults. Example: TD Canada Trust has a GIC for 5 years at 2% interest, you invest $1000 for the 5 years. After the 5 years you are able to withdraw your money and your principal of $1000 would have made $104 in interest. That is all folks! Below are some recent GIC rates, and a comparison between GICs and the Investors Dividend fund. Enjoy the short week!
