It is always tough to return home after a week in Haiti. We had a great team that came together and did awesome work while we were there. We had challenges of sick team members, but everyone rallied, picked up the missing pieces and drove ahead to get the task done. Haiti is a beautiful country with beautiful people who have a strong faith and spread love with their wonderful smiles, hugs and thankfulness for us being there. They are proud and loving people that got dealt a tough hand called life but they welcome each day, take the time to greet their neighbors and strangers and come together to form a bond whether it be a remote village 1500 feet in the mountains or a town bustling with markets, motos and tap-taps. I am humbled by them. I am amazed by them. A trip there always grounds me and causes me to step back and look around. We are a country of conveniences and we take those for granted. Count the faucets in your house that flow safe water. Enjoy the warm water as you bath. Look at your closets of clothing and shoes. How full is your refrigerator? How big is your flat screen and how many channels do you have. Can you flip a light switch and have instant electricity? Step into a place with one faucet for an entire village. Baths are taken in a river or with a bucket for rain water. Either way they are cold. Need to go to the bathroom? Find a bush of that same river you just bathed in. Electricity is foreign to most as is the concept of a TV and a refrigerator. I was ill on Monday and had the opportunity to lay in a home for a while on the most comfortable bed without a mattress. I looked around this two room home with a dirt floor and I saw no dressers of clothes or closets of shoes. In fact I saw only one pair of shoes and a couple shirts. I saw a few pictures, a few dishes and a couple chairs. I felt a ton of love. Whenever I leave a piece of me stays there and a huge piece of the country is carried home in my heart. I miss the people. I miss the country. I will be back in a few months.
