It is amazing the maze of complicated emotions that travel along with each of us. As I travel the world helping people step outside of their familiar techniques and patterns it is a intricate balance of try, allow and praise to keep the precious feeling of confidence alive and engaged. What makes this task even more daunting is adding the presence of ones beloved equine partner. This might not be a deal to many but to those that are wanting to travel a less traveled road with horses by learning their intricate but simple language and pursuing a level of communication that most have only dreamed of adds even more challenging opportunities as a teacher and a student. I have also observed that this cuts through our outer defenses and often reveals damaged emotions that have found a way to stay tucked away deep inside of us until this journey draws them out to comfront these new awarenesses. This can be a volatile time for anyone in or around as this happens. How can you prepare yourself for you, your friend, your student to handle this confrontation with style & grace? I am sure there are professionals that have thousands of hours of training that could jump on this with a wide variety of opinions for sure. However most often these delicate situations occur in the arena with a horse in hand. The horse is trying hard to figure out how to relieve the pressure that can be pretty darn intense. Often times the best solution is sadly just allowing them to work it out. That is the hardest but usually it isnt about ........ (You can fill in the blank). Respecting the feelings and not making them feel wrong is critical in maneuvering through this time of emotional chaos. Recognizing the try, rewarding the slighest try will help the horse and human make it through this time of change. Learning is simple but I will not say it is easy. So as a teacher, coach and friend I do my best to guide and encourage but I dont always succeed but it isnt for lack of trying and diligently looking for a winning solution for horse and human. Win. Win.
